How much should I budget for a renovation contingency?
We recommend a 5 to 10% contingency depending on the age of your home. For homes built before 1970, aim for 10%: older homes are more likely to have surprises like knob-and-tube wiring, galvanized plumbing, or insufficient structural support that only become visible during demolition.
Can I renovate in phases to spread the cost?
