What's the best energy upgrade to start with?
For most North Vancouver homes, an air-source heat pump offers the best combination of savings, comfort, and rebate coverage. It addresses the biggest energy expense (space heating) and adds air conditioning. If your home is very poorly insulated, combining insulation with a heat pump maximizes the benefit.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps work efficiently down to -25°C to -30°C. North Vancouver rarely drops below -5°C, so heat pumps operate at high efficiency throughout the heating season. This isn't the 1990s: today's heat pumps are a completely different technology.
How long does it take for energy upgrades to pay for themselves?
After rebates, most individual upgrades pay for themselves in 5 to 12 years through energy savings. Heat pumps (with rebates) often pay back in 5 to 7 years. Comprehensive packages pay back in 7 to 10 years. After payback, the savings continue for the life of the equipment (15 to 25 years).
Will energy upgrades increase my home's value?
Yes, increasingly so. Energy-efficient homes command growing premiums in the Vancouver market as buyers factor in lower operating costs and comfort. A home with a new heat pump, good insulation, and modern windows is more attractive than an equivalent home with an aging furnace and drafty windows.
Do I need to upgrade everything at once?
No. While a comprehensive approach gives the best results, upgrades can be phased. A common sequence: (1) insulation and air sealing first, (2) heat pump, (3) windows, (4) water heater. This order maximizes the effectiveness of each subsequent upgrade.
How much does a home's age affect its energy waste?

Does an electrical panel need to be upgraded for a heat pump?
